Working With XML Metadata Delivered by GeoStor

Each layer you download from GeoStor will contain an XML metadata file formatted in the Federal Geographic Data Committee's (FGDC) standard for metadata. This file can be imported into FGDC compliant metadata editors such as ArcCatalog or any text editor. The XML files can also be viewed in a web browser. You can read more about metadata, including links to free parsers and metadata creation tools, on the FGDC's web site by clicking here.

Below is an example of how to import the xml metadata files delivered by GeoStor for each layer into ArcGIS's ArcCatalog.

  1. On the GeoStor homepage, click on 'Search for Data'
  2. Find a layer of choice and proceed to request that layer for download.
  3. Once you receive the email notifying your data request is ready to be downloaded, click on the link contained in the email, and unzip the contents to a location on your computer or network. Be sure to note where you unzip the contents.
  4. Open ArcCatalog and navigate to the folder where you have unzipped the contents of your GeoStor zip file. In the example below, the contents (ESRI personal geodatabase and xml metadata) were unzipped to 'C:\geostor_data\'
  5. Next, highlight your shapefile by single left-clicking on the layer in the Contents window, then Activate the Metadata tab as shown below:
  6. Next, make sure your Metadata toolbar (show below) is open by clicking on View>Toolbars (verify that the toolbar 'Metadata' has a check next to it. If not, click on the word 'Metadata' to open the toolbar).
  7. On the Metadata toolbar, click the 'Import Metadata Button'
  8. On the 'Import Metadata' dialog, Browse to the location where you unzipped the contents of the GeoStor download, as shown below. Remember for this example, we unzipped the contents to 'C:\geostor_data'. Then change the format to 'FGDC CSDGM (XML)', as shown below, by clicking on the drop down menu. You can leave 'Enable automatic update of metadata' checked and this will update the spatial reference information as well as the layer title, if applicable.
  9. When you hit the 'OK' button on the dialog box above, you will then see the imported metadata as shown below:
