How To Access Map Services Using ArcExplorer 9.x

1. Open ArcExplorer Java 9.x. For download information for this free GIS data viewer, click here.
2. Click the 'Add Layers' button .
3. On the 'Catalog' window, expand the WWW section and double-click 'Add Web Site', as shown below:

4. On the 'WWW Connection' window enter http://www.geostor.arkansas.gov for the URL and click 'OK', as shown below:

5. Highlight the 'BASEMAP' service and click 'Add Layers', as shown below:

Since the 'BASEMAP' service is an image service, you can only control which layers are on and off. With a feature service, you can control more properties like symbology and labels. Feature services also serve as a container of layers allowing you to pick and choose which layers to add to the map.

6. Add the feature service 'GEOSTOR_ALL_FEATURE_LAYERS', but this time double click the service and only select a couple of layers of interest (Hint: On the keyboard, use the Cntrl or Shift key to determine which layers you want to add), as shown below:

7. Right click on 1 of the feature layers you added in step 6 and click 'Layer Properties' notice that you can change the symbology and/or label features, as shown below:

8. Now save your project. The links to the server and all your layers will be there the next time you open the project.
