How To Access Map Services Using ArcGIS 9.x

1. Open ArcCatalog.
2. In the Catalog Tree on the left, expand the GIS Servers.
3. Inside of the GIS Servers tree, double-click "Add ArcIMS Server", as shown below:

4. For the URL of server option type: http://www.geostor.arkansas.gov and click OK, as shown below:

5. Connect to the service by double-clicking on it in the GIS Servers Tree, as shown below:

The list of Services is shown in the 'Contents' window pane. Notice the different icons which differentiate between image , feature and metadata services. The services can be previewed and metadata about each service is viewable.

6. Open ArcMap and click the 'Add Data' button which looks like this: and navigate to GIS Servers> www.geostor.arkansas.gov, as shown below:

7. Add the image service 'BASEMAP' by highlighting it and clicking the 'Add' button. You can click the + sign next to the 'BASEMAP' service in the Table of Contents to see a list of layer, as shown below:

8. With a feature service, you may add each layer individually just like any other feature class. It is almost like having direct access to the geodatabase. Click the 'Add Data' button again, but this time instead of highlighting feature service, double click the feature service 'GEOSTOR_ALL_FEATURE_LAYERS' to show the contents, as shown below:

9. Find a layer you want to view and highlight that layer and click the 'ADD' button. Hint: On the keyboard, hold down the Cntl button to select multiple individual layers or the Shift button to select a group of layers.

10. Each layer from a feature service behaves similar to shapefile layer or a geodatabase layer. You can change the symbology, labels and other properties, as shown below with ADMIN.CONGRESSIONAL_DISTRICTS_TIGER symbolized by unique district number and labeled with the representatives name:

11. If you would like to download a layer from the feature service, GEOSTOR_ALL_FEATURE_LAYERS, right click on a layer and click 'Data > Export'

12. On the 'Export Data' window, you may choose to only export selected features (as in the example below) or the entire layer. Use may choose to change the coordinate system or use the layer's source (which for all GeoStor data is UTM, NAD 83, Zone 15 North, meters).

13. Save your ArcMap document. The next time you open it, the layers and the connection to the services will still be available.
